Netflix Making Old Media Nervous
And rightfully so. Deadline has a story analyzing the digital distribution landscape after Netflix announced a pretty significant increase in subscribers. This is largely due to the company’s push of its Watch Instantly feature which is now found on all three gaming consoles and a number of different set-top boxes and digital tv’s. Netflix has also expanded its digital library to include (eventually) Star Trek and will have first run rights of an original series, House of Cards.
Not everything is rosy, however, as Deadline speculates content providers might want their own piece of the pie:
[S]ome industry forecasters say Netflix could do far more damage to existing business models if it drives a consumer stampede away from pay TV. The system would collapse if masses of TV viewers decide they’re fed up paying for hundreds of channels that they don’t watch, and cut payments to companies such as Comcast and DirecTV in favor of Netflix and free, over-the-air broadcast TV.
Weasel-words aside (“some” might say? Really?) a good point is brought up. I don’t think Netflix should feel responsible for cable providers digging their own grave. Netflix didn’t change the Sci-Fi Channel to Syfy. Netflix didn’t order The History Channel to order up a bunch of reality that have little to do with history. Netflix didn’t relegate Zach Anner to a channel no one will watch. Oprah did so let’s give credit where credit is due.
Old media is on the decline; Netflix’s stock is skyrocketing while their’s remains stagnant. If anything, ISPs are the real threat to Netflix but I think it’s unlikely that Comcast or AT&T will do anything nefarious like throttle Watch Instantly bandwidth. They would be foolish as in doing so would provide the competitor in the market to swoop in and say, “Pay us and we won’t fuck you over!”
